John E. Hammett
Arcadia-John Edward Hammett, age 76, of Arcadia, La passed away peacefully June 30, 2013 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. John "Doc" Hammett was born December 18, 1936 in Natchitoches, La to Ernest "Red" Hammett and Addie Harkins Hammett.
John graduated from Natchitoches High School, completed college at Northwestern State University, and then proceeded to Loyola in New Orleans where he completed his doctorate in Dentistry in 1963. Shortly after he enlisted in the Army
and served in Japan until 1970. John moved to Arcadia in 1973 where he lived and practiced Dentistry until his death.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Billie Lou Toombs Hammett, brother Charles "Buddy" Hammett, and dear aunt, Olive Hammett Breazeale.
He is survived by his children by marriage: Lauren Talbert Kelpe, Trace Talbert, Jan Talbert Whitten, Mark Talbert, and Drew Talbert; grandchildren India Henley Torrey, Nick Henley, Zeke Kelpe, Andy Talbert, Zane Talbert, Samantha Talbert, Hannah Talbert and Cade Talbert; sister Olive Francis Hammett Cheatwood; brothers Ernest "Sonny" Hammett, Robert "Dee" Hammett, Stephen Patrick "Pat" Hammett; great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many lifelong friends, patients, and associates.
In honor of his wishes a private service will be held at graveside at a later date.
The family would like to extend special thanks and sincere appreciation to Leigh Yates, his dental assistant for the loving care provided during his illness, and to the many close friends and patients for all the care, concern, and prayers. Special thanks to Hospice of Caring Hearts of Ruston, La.
