Dr. Joseph Samuel Shavin
SHREVEPORT, LA- Dr. Joseph Samuel Shavin, 105 years of age, of Shreveport, LA, passed away on December 30, 2012. Dr. J.S. Shavin will be flown to Israel for burial.
Joseph was born April 24, 1907 in St. Louis, MO. He graduated from University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1930. He went into the Army
as a first lieutenant in The Medical Corps and served as General Surgeon. He was stationed at Barksdale Field in Louisiana, and has remained in the area since.
After serving for the Army, Joseph practiced medicine in Shreveport. He practiced general medicine, allergy, and gastroenterology. He was the first gastroenterologist in Shreveport. He was Chief of Staff at Physicians and Surgeons Hospital. He retired in his eighties from his private practice. He became bored with retirement and went to work doing physicals for the Military Entrance Processing Station for three more years. He was told he was the oldest employee of the U.S. Government, and told it was time to retire. His medical practice spanned the majority of the 20th century, witnessing two world wars, the Great Depression, the civil rights movement, and the Vietnam conflict.
Joseph was married to Louise Moore Ferris Shavin in 1987; they were married for 24 years.
He was "mash giach" (a term for spiritual leader or guide) for his congregation at Agduath Achim Synagogue.
Joseph is survived by his wife Louise Shavin; daughters, Susan Shavin, and Linda Shavin Cummer; son, Robin Shavin; grandchildren, Julie Cummer Lindsey, Jennifer Cummer Smith, Emily Cummer Pennywell, Bridgette Cummer, and Alissa Messer; great grandchildren, Colby Smith, Walker Lindsey, Mason Lindsey, and Riley Lindsey; and other family in Israel.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Garden Park Nursing Home, and St. Joseph Hospice.
