Nannie O. Bland
Nannie O. Bland, 92, passed into the hands of God on Dec.14,2012, after a brief illness. She is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Cecil E. Bland, Jr., sisters Fannie Tatem and Mary Shouse, and brother Jack Norris.
Daughters are Cecilia Bland (partner Lawrence Haydel) and Donna Berry (spouse Gil). Grandchildren are Marlene Avery of KS, Rachel Heyduck of TX, Craig Berry of NM, and Brian Berry of NM. Great grandchildren are Jacob, Bailey, Caitlin and John Berry; Robbie, Eliza and, Liam Heyduck; Nolan and Adeline Berry.
Nan was born in Elston, MO, one of twin daughters born to Flavil and Rosena McKinney and moved to Louisiana in 1922. Stepdaughter of A. L. Norris, Nan graduated from Bossier High in 1938 known as one of the "Norris Twins" who were selected "Best All Round Girl." She married Cecil in 1942. She began a newspaper career at the Southwest Builder in Sulphur, LA, (1960-1965) She retired from the editorial department of the Shreveport Journal in 1987. Nan was an artist, sketching and painting all of her life. Known for her positive outlook and her love of life, she was a woman of faith who saw the good in everyone. She taught preschool Sunday school for two generations of children at Noel church and served as president of the United Methodist Women. As a widow, she lived independently and remained active: attending senior community activities, treasuring late in life friends, participating regularly in water aerobics, and hosting her UMW circle's Christmas party..
Services will be at 11 o'clock on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at Noel Memorial United Methodist Chapel, with interment at Greenwood Cemetery. The family requests donations to Christus Grace Home in lieu of flowers.
