Elmer Norton Obituary

Elmer "Elmo" N. Norton

Elmer "Elmo" Norman Norton, beloved husband, father, pappaw, patriot and friend went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on December 30, 2015. He was born December 4, 1928 in Shreveport, LA. He loved God, his family and country with all his heart.

A celebration of a wonderful life will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 275 Southfield Road, on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Paul D. Martin officiating. Inurnment to follow in the church columbarium. A reception with the family will follow in the church parlor.

Elmo grew up in the Queensboro area and graduated from Fair Park High School in 1946. In high school, he was known as "Rubber Legs" for his jitterbug dancing. He loved his country with a passion and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps with five other graduates. He entered the Military Police Academy, then served his country in the Korean War where he received two Purple Heart medals. He also served his country in other parts of the world including China, Guam, Japan and Europe.

After returning home from military service, Elmo had a very rewarding and successful career in sales and management in the auto industry. He was named Ford Citizen of the year in 1963 for his civic and religious dedication, which included the Lion's Club. He was a former member of St. Matthias' Episcopal Church where he served as a Layreader, a member of the Vestry, Sunday School teacher, Junior Chapel leader, president of the Men's Club, and coach of the boys baseball club. He retired as fleet manager from Chevyland in 1990.

He was a past Commander of American Legion Post #14, VFW Post 5951, 40&8. He was also a member of the Heritage Foundation, Republican National Committee, and an associate member of the Professional Republican Woman of Caddo. He was a proud member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church where he served as an usher.

Elmo loved to dance and enjoyed many years of traveling with Sylvia to Europe, China, the United Kingdom, Canada and every state in our nation several times. Their favorite annual vacation destination was at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, William Thomas and Lucy Norton, brother George T. Norton, sisters Low Reese Goyne and Verda Dantzler and his mother-in-law Lillian Littlejohn.

Elmo is survived by Sylvia Littlejohn Norton, his devoted and loving wife of 59-1/2 years, daughter Lisa Norton Walker, and husband Clay, his grandson and pride and joy Jamie Walker, nieces Luce Sloan and Jan Etta Goyne, nephews Bobby Goyne, and Bill Barlow; great- nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be his classmates from Fair Park High School and members of the Caddo Parish Republican Party.

The family suggests memorials may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 275 Southfield Road, Shreveport, LA 71105.

Elmo will be remembered as a very caring and compassionate human being.

The Final Salute

Brothers in Arms, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged Hand Salutes as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This Hand Salute is the last that we shall render to Elmer Norman (Elmo) Norton our Brother in Arms, Fellow Legionnaire, Voyageur Militaire and VFW Comrade. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Elmo. And to Elmo it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country while serving in the U.S Marine Corp and for his many years of dedicated service to the American Legion, the 40&8 Society and the VFW. Elmo, you were a dedicated worker, a wonderful comrade and a strong supporter of the American Legion Post 14, Voiture 137 of the 40&8 Society and Post 5951 of the VFW. We bid you adieu and a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,261 Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, the 157 Voyageur Militaires of Voiture 137 of the 40&8 Society and the members of VFW Post 2238, we extend our sympathies and our condolences to Elmo's family and loved ones.
