Peggy Selber Obituary

Peggy Burkenroad Selber

SHREVEPORT, LA - Peggy Burkenroad Selber, age 83, loving wife, mother and grandmother, civic leader and philanthropist, passed away on September 27, 2014, following a brief illness.

The family will receive friends at a visitation to be held on Monday, September 29, 2014 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall Street, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. A private family interment service will be held at Forest Park Cemetery. Rabbi Dr. Jana L. De Benedetti will

officiate.

Peggy was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on September 13, 1931, to William B. Burkenroad, Jr. and Evelyn Kahn Levy Burkenroad. She graduated from the National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C., and attended both Newcomb College in New Orleans and Centenary College of Louisiana in Shreveport.

Peggy was an active civic leader in Shreveport and New Orleans, serving in leadership roles and on the boards and advisory boards of a number of organizations including the Sci-Port Discovery Center, the Meadows Museum of Art at Centenary College, the New Orleans Museum of Art, Louisiana Public Broadcasting, Southfield School Book Fair, Louisiana Women's Golf Association, Shreveport Women's Golf Association, Shreveport Country Club Golf Association and East Ridge Country Club Golf Association. She was a member of B'nai Zion Congregation.

Along with her husband, Aaron, Peggy was a generous philanthropist, who was recognized as the Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year. There is hardly a worthwhile charitable or educational organization in Shreveport that has not benefited from their support.

Peggy was an accomplished artist who created beautiful paintings, but perhaps her greatest accomplishments were as a golfer. Peggy was the three time champion of the Shreveport Ladies Golf Tournament, four time champion of the Shreveport Country Club Ladies Golf Tournament, six time champion of the East Ridge Country Club Ladies Golf Tournament, three time champion of the Broadmoor Ladies Golf Association Tournament, semi-finalist in the Louisiana State Women's Golf Tournament and the first champion of the Southern Trace Country Club Ladies Golf Tournament.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband of 61 years, Aaron Selber Jr. Peggy is survived by her four daughters, Patty Selber Newton and husband, Carl of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Pam Selber of Newport Beach, California, Polly Selber Gleichenhaus and husband, Barry of Denver, Colorado, Penny Selber Autenreith and husband, Robert of New Orleans, Louisiana; as well as seven grandchildren, William and Nicole Newton, Sarah, Rebecca and Benjamin Gleichenhaus, Robert and Erin Autenreith. Peggy is also survived by sister, Janie Corenswet and husband, Sam, brother-in-law, Leonard Selber and wife, Mary Anne, sister-in-law, Nancy Goldstein and husband, Bernard, a number of nieces and nephews, as well as friend and companion of many years, Helen Smith.

The family would like to thank Dr. Emma McCarty, Dr. Anil Nanda and the caring staff at the Neuro ICU Unit of the LSU University Hospital in Shreveport, the staff of Preferred Care at Home and Peggy's many friends.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Peggy's son-in-laws, Carl Newton, Barry Gleichenhaus and Robert Autenreith, her grandsons, William Newton, Benjamin Gleichenhaus and Robert Autenreith, Jr.; Dewey Corley and Helen Smith.

The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Aaron Selber, Jr. Course in Alternative Investments at Tulane University School of Business, 6823 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, La. 70118, the Aaron and Peggy Selber Fund at the LSU Health Sciences Shreveport Foundation, 920 Pierremont Road, Suite 407, Shreveport, La 71106 or the Meadows Museum at Centenary College, 2911 Centenary Blvd., Shreveport, La. 71104.

Patti, Pam,Polly, and Penny;
The lights are a little dimmer
around Shreveport without your Mother and Father. They are fine examples of a life well lived.

Those who are worn out and crushed by this mourning, let your hearts consider this:
this is the path that has existed from the time of creation and will exist forever.
Many have drunk from it and many will yet drink.
As was the first meal, so shall be the last.
May the master of comfort comfort you.
Blessed are those who comforts the mourners. Rest In Peace Mrs.Selber
