Charlene McCorkle Self

Charlene McCorkle Self, 81, of Oil City, LA, born March 27, 1931 in Colombus, AR died peacefully in her sleep on December 1, 2012 with her daughter and sitter Donna by her side. She passed away after a very brief battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Gorsulowsky Funeral Home in Vivian, LA officiated by Rev. Randy Riley of Trinity Heights Baptist Church in Shreveport. Burial will follow at Forest Park Cemetery. There will be a time of visitation on Tuesday from 1 until service time.

Charlene lived in the Texarkana, AR area until graduating from Garland City, AR High School. She moved to Oil City in 1948 where she met and married the love of her life, L.E. "Gene" Self on May 29, 1949. She lived in Shreveport and Oil City.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 ½ years, Luther E. "Gene" Self, her parents Charles and Helen Timmons McCorkle and in-laws Thomas Edgar and Carrie Coleman Self. Brothers and sister, Charles W., Jerry and Ethel McCorkle and sister-in-law and husband Calvin and Sybil Self Twitchell.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Doug Self of Bossier City, Tom Self of Shreveport, Chuck Self of Minden and Lydia Susan Self Adams of Oil City, her grandchildren; Scott Self of Dallas, TX, Medina McKellar of Montgomery, TX, Todd Self of Bossier City, Jared Carter and Courtney Pate both of Bossier City, Hannah, Katie and Hunter Self of Shreveport, Emily and Haley Self of Minden, David and Emerald Adams of Mineral Wells, TX, and 8 great-grandchildren with another on the way. She is also survived by her sister Bertha Sexton of Texarkana, AR and beloved niece Mary Helen Sexton of Texarkana, AR, her nephew Dale Collum of Wake Village, Rick Sexton of Horatio, AR, Mike and Danny Twitchell and Becky Rausch.

Pallbearers will be Paul and David Rimsky, C.C Sanders, Lannie Leggett, and nephews, Dale Collum and Rick Sexton. Honorary pallbearers will be Doyle Smith, Mastin Robison, Bobby Trimble and Joe Reeder.

Special thanks to Regional Hospice Chaplin Dave, Nurses Kate and Julie, social worker Christy. Extra special thanks to her precious sitters Donna Kelly and Charlotte Yeager.
