Clyde Howell, 91, passed away May 14, 2013 in Shreveport, LA. He was born in Haughton, LA on July 28, 1921 to Joseph F. and Dovie Mae Chandler Howell.
Mr. Howell joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, later the U.S. Air Force, in 1941. During more than 26 years, he served in the South Pacific, Korea, Japan and Greenland, plus more than 13 stateside posts. He spent a number of years in food service and then in air weather service. He retired in 1967 as a Senior Master Sergeant stationed in Charleston, S.C.
Among many service related honors is the Air Force Commendation Medal while a non-commissioned officer in charge of the Observing Section, Detachment 13, 15 Weather Squadron at Robins A.F.B., GA from October 24, 1961 to June 23, 1964. He was recognized for "outstanding knowledge and leadership for immeasurably raising the effectiveness of his section from average to outstanding. " He also was a life-long sports enthusiast and particularly enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Mr. Howell married Catherine Werner of New Orleans on December 18, 1941. They had one child in 1943. Mrs. Howell died April 19 of this year. He is survived by his daughter, Linda and son-in-law William Fernald of Great Falls, VA . He is buried next to his wife at Hill Crest Memorial Park in Haughton, LA.
A Celebration of Life service was held on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at noon at Hill Crest Memorial Chapel. Bro. Billy Pierce officiated the service.
