Dr. Joseph Albert

Sonnier, III

SHREVEPORT, LA - Dr. Joseph Albert Sonnier III, 57, died at his home in Lubbock, Texas, July 10, 2012. Visitation will be held at Osborn Funeral Home on Monday, July 16, from 12-2 p.m. Funeral services will begin in the chapel at 2 p.m. Officiating will be Rev. Mimi McDowell of Noel United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Rose Neath Cemetery.

Dr. Sonnier grew up in Shreveport where he and his family moved to in 1966. He was a graduate of Captain Shreve High School. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge in 1976, graduating summa cum laude. He received his medical degree from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport. He was chosen for a residency in Pathology at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas, where in his final year he was made Chief Resident. At the completion of his studies, he worked for and made partner at DPA Laboratories, which he sold to AmeriPath. At the time of his death, Dr. Sonnier was still with AmeriPath as Medical Director and Chief Pathologist for Covenant Health System in Lubbock.

Dr. Sonnier was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Albert Sonnier Jr. He is survived by his two sons: Joseph Albert Sonnier IV (Dallas), his wife, Shannon, and their two children, Camilla and Joseph Albert Sonnier V (Cal), of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; and James Curtis Sonnier and his wife, Peggy, of Houston, Texas. He is also survived by his mother, Anna Marie Sonnier of Shreveport, as well as his two sisters, Susie McBride and Missy Bartlett and her husband, Randy, of Shreveport, his brother Dr. George Sonnier and his wife, Karin, of Louisville, Ky., Philip Prestwood, whom he also considered a son, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was especially close to his uncle, Donald E. Sonnier of Bossier Parish

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Memorial Fund at Holy Angels Residential Facility, 10450 Ellerbe Road, Shreveport, La., 71106 (Chief Executive Office Laurie Boswell). Dr. Sonnier's nephew, Nicholas McBride, is a resident of this facility.
