Margaret Roemer Read ("Peggy")

NEW ORLEANS, LA - Margaret Roemer Read ("Peggy"), founder of the Friends of City Park and instrumental in the revival of the Botanical Garden at City Park in New Orleans, departed this life on Monday, February 15, 2010, at her home in uptown New Orleans at the age of 91. Peggy was the daughter of Charles Elson Roemer and Maggie Crocker Roemer Mayer of Bossier City, LA. She later served as president of the City Park Board of Commissioners and her services to the Friends and to the Park were honored by the designation of the large oak tree adjacent to the Pavillion of the Two Sisters in City Park as the "Peggy Read Oak Tree".

She was active as an undergraduate at Newcomb and continued her involvement with the school, serving as president of the Newcomb College National Alumni Association. She was active in fundraising for the United Way, WYES, and many other causes. She also enjoyed her role as a docent at the New Orleans Museum of Art.

She was a member of the Orleans Club and Le Petit Salon, serving on the board of the latter for many years.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Henry James Read, their daughters Margaret Read Pontius (Dr. Uwe R.) of San Antonio, TX and Katherine Read Ezell (Mr. Steven D.) of Nashville, TN, and three grandchildren: Lauren Walker Ezell, Read Douglas Ezell, and Eleanor Baldwin Ezell.

I met Peggy shortly after she arrived at Newcomb in 1936 and although I haven't seen Peggy for many, many years I still remember her as a most charming person --

Mr. Read, my husband and I extend our deepest sympathies to you and all your family. I met you and Mrs. Read at Marky's many years ago, she was so kind and I never forgot what a sweet, gentle lady she was. I am so glad I got to meet her. God bless you all at this sad time.

Dear Uncle Henry, Marky and Katy,

My thoughts, prayers and love are with you all at this very moment with the news of Aunt Peggy's death. I have such fond memories of spending the night on Perrier Street, Christmas night parties, great food and the sharing of recipes when I took such an interest in cooking as I grew up.
Along with those thoughts another happy one came to mind: Arthur Davidson must be some happy to see one of his favorite bridge players and daddy must be happy to see one of his favorite cooks!
I will come by later on tonight or tomorrow (calling first of course) to visit with all of you.

With love and Gods blessings,
Linda
