SHREVEPORT, LA- Mrs. Mary Etta Jinks Huff, 88, departed this life on November 3, 2012 after a lengthy illness. "Mrs. Mary," or "Aunt Sis" as she was known to family, was born October 20, 1924, near Castor, LA, the first daughter and fourth child of Frank and Eunice Jinks. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Robert L. Huff, of Keithville; younger sister, Mrs. Dorothy Peavy, of Arcadia; sister-in-law, Sharon Jinks, of Keithville; son and daughter-in-law, Richard L. and Svetlana A. Huff, of Keithville; step-grandson, Stan Chuprin, of Dallas, TX; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Robert F., James D., and Allen F. Jinks.
Mrs. Mary graduated Castor High at age 15 and attended Louisiana Normal/Northwestern College for two years, as part of the girls' basketball team. In 1943 she was a civilian telephone operator at Camp Polk in Leesville, where she met her future husband, Robert, of Hudson, MA. He was so intrigued by her voice over the phone that he had to meet her. They were married March 10, 1944, in DeRidder, LA, on Robert's 24th birthday. In 1954 she and Robert moved to Ashtabula, OH, where she worked as an accountant and Pinney Dock & Transport Co., and Carlisle Brothers' Department Store, and where her son, Richard was born. In 1983 she and Robert returned to Louisiana, where she was employed at the Shreveport State Office of Medicare/Medicaid Eligibility until retirement.
She was active in Altrusa International of Ohio, Summer Grove United Methodist Church of Shreveport, the Summer Grove UMC Womens' League, and the Ragan-Middleton Sunday School Class.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at Rose-Neath's Southside Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Mark Bray of Summer Grove United Methodist Church and assisted by her nephew, Rev. Jeffrey Jinks of Wallace Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Forest Park West Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be members of the Keithville Landmark Lodge #214.
The family wishes to extend thanks to all the staff in Shreveport/Bossier who attended to Mrs. Mary in her last years and in particular to Dr. Randy DelMundo.
Her unassuming manner and thoughtful, wise counsel will be missed by all who knew her. Bye for now.
