Mary Kathryn Cowen Petrus
SHREVEPORT, LA - I, Mary Kathryn Cowen Petrus departed this earth for Heaven on Friday, April 27, 2012. I was born August 25, 1951 in Shreveport, LA and reborn into the family of God in 1965 during a Billy Graham Crusade at the Houston Astrodome.
If you are reading this in the newspaper, you may think I am dead. But, actually, I am more alive now than I have ever been. I have had eternal life since age 13 when I made Jesus LORD of my life. I have loved Him more with each new day, and telling others that He died so that we could live has been such a privilege. With His very life, He paid my debt for sin that I could never have paid in a million lifetimes.
I was preceded to Heaven by my parents, William R. and Margaret Jo Cowen, grandparents, Richard V. and Ruth Towler, William Purdy and Edna Cowen and nephew, Chase Cowen as well as all my Christian ancestors. There is so much love here and beauty and joy that are indescribable. God's Word says, "Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and which have not entered the heart of man, all that God has prepared for those who love Him." 1st Cor.2:9 God and Jesus light up heaven so it never gets dark here. It is always bright. "The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp." Rev. 21:23
During my earthly life, I taught kindergarten for 38 yrs. and loved my children and co-workers. I belonged to the precious family of Broadmoor Baptist Church and Dr. Charles Goben's Sunday School Class. I loved facilitating women's Bible Studies at BBC on Tuesday nights and working on various committees for the progress of the gospel. While having fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ was precious to me, all earthly things cannot compare with the exquisite joy of knowing Him!
Temporarily, I leave behind me my precious family members: my loving husband, Robert M. Petrus, son, Richard M. Petrus, his wife, Sarah Treadaway Petrus and granddaughter, Emma Grace Petrus. Brothers, John W. Cowen, his wife, Pam, and Neal T. Cowen and his wife, Debbie all of Shreveport. Uncle, Richard V. Towler, Jr., and wife, Ann of Tulsa, Ok. Also, left behind are my dear mother-in-law, Frances Nugent Petrus, brother-in-law, Joseph W. Petrus, wife, Nancy and sister-in-law, Lydia Petrus Kennedy, husband, Gary Kennedy. Nieces and nephews: Lesa Townsend and son, Nick; Wendi Grabener, husband, Scott and daughter, Abbie; Cody Cowen, wife Haily and sons, Christian and Hayden; Sarah Nelson, husband Danny and son, Owen; Alex Kennedy; John William Cowen; and Claire Kennedy.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Ferguson, Tom Pendelton, Ron Mitchell, Ron Ketcham, Bill Dowling, and Dr. M. E. "Sonny" Milstead. Honorary pallbearers will Dr. Charlie Black, Dr. Charles Goben, Dr. Tommy Mook, Robert Mackey, Ed Durham, Burdette Hoopes, Harry Rouse, David Lovell, Kurk Howes, and Jim Fenter.
One day we will be reunited, because they, too, belong to God through His Son, Jesus Christ, LORD and Savior of our lives.
Anne Graham Lotz said, "In view of the fact that we're expecting to see Jesus at any moment, He tells us to take three primary actions: to watch for His return, to work until He does return, and to walk with Him in such a way that our lives are a witness to others. What will you do now to incorporate all three actions into your daily life? Will you live your life with the keen expectancy of seeing Jesus?"
My prayer is that believers reading this may be encouraged. But, more eternally important, that unbelieving hearts may be touched by God and drawn to Him by the Holy Spirit. I pray that your life would be changed and that you would become a new creature in Christ. Contact a minister at BBC or BGEA - Billy Graham Evangelistic Assoc. - on how to spend eternity in Heaven. I hope I'll see you here one glorious day! Begin your new eternal life today - receive Christ!
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 30, 2012, at Osborn Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at Broadmoor Baptist Church with Dr. Chuck Pourciau officiating with a brief visitation prior to the service. Interment will follow at Forest Park Cemetery.
