Ralph Rogers Hicks "PawPaw", age 87, of Shreveport passed away February 6, 2012, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease. Forest Park Funeral Home, 1201 Louisiana Ave., will be handling the arrangements, where the family will receive friends from 5:00pm until 7:00pm on Thursday, February, 9, 2012. Services will be at 2:00pm on Friday, February 10, 2012 at the Forest Park Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow at Forest Park West Cemetery. Rev. Steve Caraway, Pastor of Mangum Memorial United Methodist Church will officiate.
Mr. Hicks was a lifelong resident of Shreveport being born to India Beryl Deason Hicks and Ralph Rogers Hicks, Sr. on June 1, 1924.
Mr. Hicks was a graduate of Fair Park High School and proudly serviced his country with the United States Army. While in the Army he was assigned to the 75th Infantry Division as a Military Policeman. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge, in the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe Campaigns. For his service he was awarded three (3) Bronze Stars, the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, Victory Ribbon, two (2) Overseas Bars and the Good Conduct Medal.
After returning from the Army, he worked as a stereotyper for the Shreveport Newspaper Production Company and later retired from the National AFL-CIO as a Staff Representative. He was a member of Mangum Memorial United Methodist Church and loved playing golf and following LSU sports.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Roger Hicks; a sister, Marinel Brock and brother, Ned Hicks.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years, Judy Kirkpatrick Hicks; son, Dick Hicks and wife Sharon of Baton Rouge; daughters, Kay Broussard and husband, Don of Shreveport and Marian Patterson and husband Tom of Baton Rouge; grandchildren, Richie Hicks of Lynchburg, VA, Julie Riches and husband, Matt of Calgary, Alberta, Dusty Hicks of Baton Rouge, Craig Broussard and wife Holly of Shreveport, Carla Broussard of Shreveport, Donnie Broussard of Greenwood and Connor Patterson of Baton Rouge; great-grandchildren, Anysleigh, Schyler, Jake, Jett, Olivia and Kyndall, numerous nieces and nephews as well as a host of friends.
Honoring Mr. Hicks as pallbearers will be Richie and Dusty Hicks, Donnie Broussard, Craig Broussard, Paul Strolis and Connor Patterson.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Sister Suny and her staff at Christus Schumpert Highland Hospital, Mr. Gerald Johnson and his staff, Ms. Faye, Ms. Ebony and Ms. Ura and also Amanda Scroggins.
