Joseph Peter Gaffney

Shreveport, LA - Joseph Peter Gaffney was born on November 11, 1940, in Cleveland, Ohio, and died on Thursday, April 24, 2014 in Shreveport. He had moved with his family to Shreveport in 1948, where his father managed the Wolff's Bakery. Pete attended A.C. Steere Elementary, Broadmoor Junior High and was a 1959 graduate of Byrd High School. He earned his BBA in 1963 and his MBA in 1964 from the Tulane University College of Business Administration. Following his studies, he served in the U.S. Air Force for four years, during which he attained his Certificate of Public Accounting. He was awarded the Air Force Distinguished Medal of Service and was honorably discharged at the rank of Captain in 1968.

Pete returned to Shreveport after his military service and joined the firm of Heard, McElroy & Vestal, LLC in 1968. He was head of the tax department before becoming managing partner of the firm in 1990. The firm grew in size during his tenure, expanding to offices in Bossier and West Monroe. Pete retired from the firm in 2006. He was also a member of the Board of Directors and the Loan Committee of Business First Bank.

Pete remained proud of his military service throughout his lifetime. He was instrumental in the formation of the Military Affairs Council which united the communities of Shreveport and Bossier City in crucial support of Barksdale AFB .He served as both chairman and treasurer of the Council. He was chairman of the Eighth Air Force Consultation Committee and treasurer of Barksdale Forward. Pete was also very involved in other aspects of the community. He was the president of the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce, president of the local chapter of the Society of Certified Public Accountants, chairman of the Committee of One Hundred and an active member of the Downtown Development Authority. He served as a member of the vestry and as treasurer of St. Mark's Cathedral. He was involved in the formation of Sci-Port Discovery Center. Regionally, he served on the Tulane Business School Council, Tulane University Associates, Louisiana State Racing Commission and as chairman of the Louisiana Employment and Training Council. He was always willing to offer his accounting expertise to many community organizations.

In 1994, he received the Outstanding Public Service Award from the Louisiana Society of CPAs. For his long-standing involvement in civic and charitable causes, Mr. Gaffney was named the 1995 Business Leader of the Year by the Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce. In 2005, he was inducted as a Laureate to the Junior Achievement of North Louisiana Business Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Charlotte; his daughters, Erin and her husband, Darin Ward, of Tomball, TX; Shannon and her husband, Holt Speir, of Montgomery, AL; Meredith and her husband, Clay Nelson, of Shreveport; and his son, Patrick, and his partner Robert Greenan, of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Ashley Ward, Coleman and Holt Speir, and Gaffney and Lila Nelson, and his sisters, Peg and her husband, Robert Shemwell, of Shreveport, Gloria and Sam Hocking of Dallas, TX, and his sister-in-law, Mary Margaret and her husband, Martin Vick of Conroe, TX. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held at Osborn Funeral Home at 3631 Southern Avenue in Shreveport from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 27. A memorial service will be held at St. Mark's Cathedral at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 28.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to St. Mark's Cathedral, The Community Foundation of NW LA or to the .
