Tom "Papa T" Barker
VIVIANS, LA -A celebration service will be held to honor the life of Tom "Papa T" Barker on Saturday, May 17, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at The Pentecostals of Bossier City. This celebration will be officiated by Rev. Jerry Dean, Pastor and Rev. Shannon Stanley, Assistant Pastor. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Oil City, LA. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 16, 2014, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at The Pentecostals of Bossier City.
Tom was born on December 28, 1938, in El Dorado, AR and went home to be with the Lord, surrounded by his family, on May 13, 2014, in Shreveport, LA. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Gracie Lee Barker, and sister, Jimmie Lou Bates.
Tom is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Lee Womack Barker, and two daughters, Karen Berry and husband Ken, and Lisa New and husband Mark. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Josh New (Alison), Bethany Cheatham (Joseph), Kaleb Berry (Joy Beth) and Kael Berry; great-grandchildren, Hunter Cheatham and John Thomas New; sister, Linda Kay Hammond (John) and a very special friend, John Walter (Pearlie).
He loved his family beyond measure. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his grandchildren. Tom loved Caddo Lake, fishing, playing cards and people. He loved his Pastor Jerry Dean, his church family and took every opportunity to tell the world about Jesus and the life-changing experience that transformed his life as a young man. He was truly an example of one growing in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, II Peter 3:18.
Pallbearers will be Robert Brown, Johnny Ford, Erik Hammond, Alan Hennigan, Justin Rhoads and Kent Rhoads. Honorary pallbearers will be R. J. Barksdale, Marvin Rhoads, John Walter and Preston Williams.
Memorials may be sent to The Pentecostals of Bossier City, 2833 Viking Drive, Bossier City, LA 71111, in lieu of flowers.
The family would like to extend special thanks to his doctors and care-givers: Dr. Michael Gooszen, Cardiologist; Dr. Steven Boniel, Oncologist; and Dr. Richard Kamm, Jr., Critical Care; the ICU Staff at WK Pierremont and Christus Health Cancer Center.
