Robert Woods Jackson, Sr.

SHREVEPORT, LA - Robert Woods "Bobby" Jackson, Sr. passed away on Monday, the 25th of May, at Promise Hospital in Shreveport after an extended illness. He was 87.

He was born on the 12th day of November, 1921, at Gandy, Louisiana. His parents were Charlie and Cora Jackson. The family moved to Mansfield when he was seven years old, and Mansfield would always be called home. He always enjoyed driving through Mansfield and reminiscing about his childhood. He had been a resident of Shreveport for over 50 years.

He was predeceased by his parents, an infant son, brothers: Frank Jackson, Jessie Lee Jackson, Charlie Jackson, Claude Jackson, and Curtis Jackson, and sisters: Virginia Pittman, and Helen Corley.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Laura Derrick Jackson; one son Robert W. Jackson, Jr. and wife Sandi of Shreveport, and their children, Jennifer Miller of Vancouver, B.C., and Michael Aufrichtig of New York; one daughter, Connie Jackson Thigpen and husband Roy of Shreveport; one grandchild, Roy E. "Ret" Thigpen IV of Houston, Texas; two brothers, Gene Jackson of Shreveport and Henry Jackson of Mansfield; three sisters: Louise Bickham of Mansfield, Dean King of Shreveport, Martha Lynn Kelly of Bernice; one sister-in-law, Yvonne Jackson of Shreveport; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his two best buddies, Rocky and Buddy.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, in North Africa and Anzio. He was pinned down in a foxhole for six months below the abbey at Monte Cassino. He was awarded a purple heart for his service. Even though his war wounds caused him great pain throughout his lifetime, he never complained about his service.

He was a retired plant superintendent for Mid-Continent Steel and Kast Metals. Upon learning that he had a grandchild on the way, he immediately retired and bought a new house so that he could be near the baby.

Visitation will be on Wednesday between the hours of 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home on Mansfield Road in Shreveport. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Thursday, at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Brother Ron Johnson, pastor of Mission Point Baptist Church will officiate. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. at Union Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Converse (Union Springs) Louisiana.

Pallbearers will be Joe Craig Fleniken, Kenny Kelly, Terry Kelly, Jimmy Don Anderson, David Wheeler, and Jackie Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Raymond Peacock, and Bernice Crittenden.

The family expresses sincere gratitude to all of the doctors and nurses for their care. The family gives very special thanks to his personal caregivers at home, Felicia Schneider, Marilyn Douglas,Christine Ellard, Cassandra Martin, and Raymond Webster.
