J. Howard Hooper

Shreveport, LA - J. Howard Hooper passed away on Monday, June 11, 2012. Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 14, at Osborn Funeral Home. Graveside services will begin 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 15, at Forest Park Cemetery, St. Vincent. Officiating will be Dr. Carl Rhoads of First United Methodist Church.

Mr. Hooper was born in Tioga, Louisiana to Mr. and Mrs. J. Howard Hooper, Sr. on June 24, 1915. He attended schools in Tioga, Bastrop and received his B. A. degree from Centenary College in 1937. He was active in student affairs and athletics in high school and college. At Bastrop High School, he was president of the junior and senior classes and was a three year letterman in football and basketball, being named to the Louisiana All-State Basketball Team his senior year. At Centenary College, he was President of his fraternity, Theta Kappa Nu (now Lambda Chi Alpha). He was a three-year letterman in football and basketball and was captain of both the football and basketball teams in the 1936-37 seasons.

Howard married Annelle Hutchinson on December 21, 1938 and after living in Houston and Midland, Texas for several years, being associated with Phillips Petroleum Company, he returned to Shreveport to become Regional Exploration Manager for the Oil & Gas Division of the Chicago Corporation. After leaving the Chicago Corporation, he continued to be associated in the petroleum industry as an independent.

Mr. Hooper was a former member of the Independent Petroleum Association of America, American Association of Petroleum Landmen and a charter member of the Ark-La-Tex Association of Petroleum Landmen. He was a charter member of the Shreveport Petroleum Club and was a former member of its Board of Directors. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Shreveport and was a former member of its administrative board.

Mr. Hooper was preceded in death by his wife, Annelle Hutchinson Hooper; son, Jay Edward Hooper; parents; brothers and sisters. He is survived by his daughter, Margaret Hooper Anderson and husband, Bob; grandchildren, Leslee Roche and husband, Chris, Suzanna Lowder and husband, Chris, Carolyne Nettles and husband, Mark, Devin Smith and wife, Stefanie and Bo Hooper; great grandchildren, Casey Roche, Bailey Roche, Janie Hooper, Mary Hooper, Danielle Lowder, Caroline Lowder, Lucie Nettles, Lilah Nettles, Jackson Smith, Dylan Smith, Landry Smith; step-grandchildren, Stacy Mijalis and husband, Gus and Susan Wicker and husband, Ryan, step-great-grandchildren, Madison Shuey and Miller Shuey.

Honorary pallbearers will be Devin Smith, Mark Nettles, Chris Roche, Chris Lowder, Bob Anderson and Jack Everett.
