Shreveport, LA - Mrs. Sue Mathews passed away on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, after a lengthy illness. Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 12, at Osborn Funeral Home. Graveside services will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2012, at Forest Park Cemetery. Officiating will be Dr. David Brice, of Kings Highway Christian Church.
Sue was a native of Vicksburg, MS. Her friends there always knew her as "Sue Carlton". She earned a BA in Chemistry and a BS in Medical Technology from the University of Mississippi, in Oxford, MS, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority.
She was a resident of Shreveport for over fifty years. She began her career as Staff Technologist at P & S Hospital in Shreveport, LA, and she worked there for nineteen years. Beginning in April, 1971, she served as Laboratory Director at Humana Hospital - Brentwood, for thirteen years.
Sue married James Benjamin "Ben" Mathews in 1953. When Ben Mathews died in 1969, she took up the raising of their four young children.
In the 1990's, she returned to Vicksburg to care for her aging mother. Sue was a quiet, home-loving person. She offered peace and cheerfulness to all who were blessed to know her.
Mrs. Mathews was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Mathews; parents, George Winters Rogers, Sr. and Marion Todd Rogers; and her brother-in-law, Edwin Mathews. She is survived by her daughter, Amy Mathews Creel and husband, Kris; three sons, Mark Mathews and wife, Penny, Reed Mathews and Gary Mathews and wife, Stephanie; four grandchildren, Ben Mathews, Jake Creel and Keith and Amy Delahoussaye; brother, George Winters Rogers, Jr. and his wife, Muriel; sister-in-law, Mary Doles and husband, Sam; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to AmericCare Hospice Agency and to Penny Mathews for the love and care she provided in Sue's final months.
