Ken Burgess Jr. Obituary
Kenneth Graham "Bear" Burgess, Jr

Shreveport, LA - Ken Burgess, 58, was born in New York; however, the majority of his life was spent in Shreveport, La. He passed away peacefully on November 15, 2012 following a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by family and friends during his final hours. He is preceded in death by his wife of 29 years, Sharman Sachs Burgess.

Ken had an illustrious career in the banking industry. He began his career at American Bank and Trust Company in Shreveport where he worked for 10 years in various capacities, including the lending and internal audit functions. He left private banking to pursue a career in the bank regulatory arena that spanned 24 years. He began his regulatory career with the FDIC's Resolution Trust Corporation and the Division of Liquidation. After serving with these divisions to liquidate assets of failed financial institutions, he turned his attention to the role of a bank examiner. He worked in the FDIC Division of Supervision and Consumer Protection. His last assignment was in the Shreveport FDIC field office.

His larger than life stature gave rise to his moniker of the "Bear". Despite his outward appearance, Ken possessed a sweet, endearing spirit. His family and friends knew he could be stern when necessary, but they also knew he loved them all unconditionally.

Ken is survived by his three children: one son, Kenneth R. Burgess of Las Vegas, Nevada; and two daughters, Dr. Brandy Burgess of Lenexa, KS; Lauren and Will Kallbreier and children Walker and Caroline of Canton, GA; his niece Scarlet and Timothy Pope and children Caleb and Kendall of Shreveport, LA; and his sister Leslye Burgess of Ashburn, VA. In addition, he leaves a host of friends including the staff of the FDIC Shreveport field office and his close friend of 30 years, Judge Steven Callaway. A special thanks to the FDIC staff and Judge Callaway for their continued assistance and support, especially during his illness.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or the ALS Association. A celebration of Ken's life will be held on December 29, 2012 from 2-4 pm at the El Chico's restaurant on Fern Avenue in Shreveport, LA.
