SHREVEPORT, LA - Mrs. Helen Maxwell Smith, 92, passed peacefully in her sleep at Grace Home on Saturday, January 5, 2013, after a lengthy illness. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 12th, at Osborn Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 3:30 p.m. in the chapel of Osborn Funeral Home with Rev. Anthony Nations officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Park Cemetery.
Helen was born to William Taylor Maxwell and Myrtle Lang in Monroe, LA on January 9, 1920 and was married to "Glen" Smith in July 1937 after her graduation from Fair Park High School. Helen was owner of Smith Realty Company, and was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. She was an avid golfer and longtime member of East Ridge Country Club and Lakeview United Methodist Church.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Glen; brothers, Frank and Buddy Maxwell; sisters, Maggie Butler and Kitty Parrish. She is survived by her two sons, Tommy Smith and his wife, Bonnie, and Jay Smith and his wife, Maureen; four grandchildren, Jonathon Smith and wife, Michelle, Margaret Smith, Kelly Crawford and husband, Robert, Kristi West and husband, John; two step-grandchildren, Mathew and Tyler Williams; five great-grandchildren, Brady, Mary Ella, Madeline, Evan and Annika; three nephews, Ralph Butler, Larry Shea and Buddy Maxwell, Jr.; and one niece, Martha Rousset. She is also survived by her lifelong friend and twin sister, Millie "Shea" Hawkins with whom she talked with daily and was at her side during her final days.
Pallbearers will be Tyler Williams, Mathew Williams, Jonathon Smith, Robert Crawford, John West and Skipper Butler. Honorary pallbearers will be Ralph Butler and Larry Shea.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the Grace Home staff and in particular Hospice nurse Chris King and Bonnie Smith for going above and beyond in their care giving.
