Frank Julian Hamby, Jr.

SHREVEPORT, LA - Frank Julian Hamby, Jr., age 87, entered into eternal rest with his Heavenly Father and Lord Jesus Christ on Sunday, January 13, 2013. A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at Summer Grove Baptist Church in Shreveport, La.; interment will follow the service at Centuries Memorial Park in Shreveport. Officiating will be Bro. Billy Crosby assisted by Guy Ben Murphrey, the son-in-law of Mr. Hamby. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 15 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home in Shreveport.

Mr. Hamby was born on September 9, 1925, in Mobile, Ala. He moved to Shreveport as a young child and resided here all of his life. He was educated at Byrd High School and Centenary College. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He owned Hamby Auto Supply until he retired. An active member at Southside Baptist Church for many years, he taught a Sunday School class and was a Godly impact in the lives of many children and youth. At the time of his heavenly home going, he had been an active member of Summer Grove Baptist Church for several years. He was also a Gideon for many years and was involved in prison ministry as well.

An outstanding and loving husband, father, and grandfather, he provided an abundance of happy times for all who knew him. "Gang-Gang" held a special place in his heart for children and they also adored him. His children cherish the many happy memories he gave them while they were growing up. He was also a friend to all and always willing to lend a helping hand.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frank J. Hamby, Sr., and mother, Minnie Jean Drummond Hamby, a brother, Charles E. Hamby, and son-in-law, Dr. Samuel F. Burke, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Wanda Smith Hamby, daughters, Susan K. Hamby, of West Monroe, La., Julianne (Anne) Hamby Burke, of Shreveport, Jean Marie Murphrey, and husband, Guy Ben, of Tomball, TX, son, Rusty, and wife, Mary, of Shreveport. He is also survived by grandchildren, Amy LaLena, Dustin LaLena, Ashley McCutcheon and husband Ty, Gage and Reed Hamby, Joshua and Bethany Murphrey, and great-grandchildren, Julianne LaLena, Zoee Buell, and Tripp and Magnolia McCutcheon. Also left to cherish his memory are his sisters, Edith Burns, Jackie Downs, Dorothy Green of Shreveport, and Charlotte Mayeux of Opelousas, La., and several nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Pallbearers will be Reed Hamby, Joshua Murphrey, Daniel Stuckmeyer, Thomas Stuckmeyer, Bob Camus, Jr., and Rodney Pennington. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Gideon's International.
