Helen Tatum Maffett
Helen Tatum Maffett, 84, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 23, 2013. Born June 27, 1928 in Longstreet, Louisiana, she was the fifth of eight children to Curtis and Sallie Cates Tatum. Helen lived in Shreveport for over 65 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Myrtus W. Maffett, one grandson Matthew Furlow, her parents and four of her seven brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughter Claire Maffett Puryear (Mike), two sons, Richard Weyman Maffett, Randal Tatum Maffett (Barb); she was known as "Mammet" by her four grandchildren, Mary Coker (Sherman), Noelle Carpenter (J.T.), Tanner Maffett and Tessa Maffett; and "G-G" to her two great-grandsons, William and Ben Coker and a "third little punkin" on the way. She is also survived by her brother John Smith Tatum; two sisters, Hilda Tatum Thompson and Millie Tatum Esser-Colton; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Helen was a member of Shreve City Baptist Church and Broadmoor Baptist Church. She worked over 20 years as a nurse at Pilgrim Manor Nursing Home in Bossier City and devoted much of her life to caring for family and friends. She was a wonderful wife, a loving mother and grandmother and dear friend, who will be missed by many.
A visitation will be held in Shreveport from 5-7 pm, Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at Rose Neath Funeral Home Marshall Street. A graveside service will be at the Sardis Cemetery near Converse, Louisiana at 10 am on Wednesday, February 27, 2013, followed by a lunch reception at Midway Baptist Church in Converse.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request memorials be given in Helen's memory to the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home in Monroe, Louisiana.
