Paul Richard Spikes
SHREVEPORT, LA-Paul Richard Spikes, 96, died peacefully at home on Monday, April 22, 2013. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary A Spikes, his parents and six siblings: Thomas, Glen, Ruth, Lucy, Pearl, and Bettie Jane Spikes. He is survived by his four children, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Children and in-laws: Margaret Spikes Gilmore and John of Naperville, IL, Joan Spikes Carter and Billy of Shreveport, LA, Carol Spikes Hadley and Randy of Austin, TX, and Steven Spikes and Lezley of Sulphur, OK. Grandchildren: John Gilmore of Milwaukee, WI, Megan Gilmore of Lausanne, Switzerland, Paul Carter of Shreveport, LA, Lynda Kennelly Thigpen of Katy, TX. Great-grandchildren: Richard Paul Carter and Katie Melody Carter of Newport News, VA, and Brett, Paige and Kara Thigpen of Katy, TX.
Paul Spikes was born at home on the farm in Grannis, Arkansas to Mary George Spikes and Albert A Spikes on January 6, 1917. Mr. Spikes married Mary A Fortune in 1947 in Pittsburg, Kansas where they lived for twenty-three years. He had a long career with the KCS Railway as a civil engineer. He was transferred to Shreveport in 1960 and retired in 1982. Paul was a resident of Spring Lake Assisted Living for 7 years and received loving care by all of their staff. The family is very thankful for the TLC given to Paul Spikes.
Paul was a veteran of World War II and the US 8th Army Air Force as Staff Sergeant in England and France during the war years surveying air fields and was recommended for the Bronze Star. Paul was an avid hunter and fisherman throughout his life.
Services will be held at Rose Neath Southside Funeral Home on Friday, April 26, 2013 at 10 am, with visitation at 9 am. Officiating will be Rev. Doug Burnley and Father Francis Kamau.
