William Gately

Shreveport, LA - William Gately of Shreveport passed away at age 90 on April 29, 2013 after a short illness. Bill Gately was born in Framingham, Mass., and had lived in Shreveport since 1945, when he returned from the war in Europe to marry Darlene Reeves, the young woman he had met two years earlier while training. Bill was retired from the Riley-Beaird Co. and was a member of the Freemasons and the Shriners.

Early on D-Day, June 6, 1944, Sgt. Bill Gately parachuted into Normandy as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. For his actions there and later during the Battle of the Bulge, he was awarded Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals, and was recognized in 2006 by the French government by its award of the Legion d'Honneur.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife Darlene after 63 years of marriage, and he is survived by his son Bill and his wife Marie-Alice, their children Sarah (fiancé Brian Austin) and Nick; and by daughter Sherill Murrell and her daughters Leslie (husband Rafael Zamarripa) and Emily (husband Jonny Gates); and four great-grandchildren, Jackson and Annie Gates, and Annabel and Lily Zamarripa.

The family held a private service of remembrance, and his ashes will be interred at the Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery.
