Gerald Davis Ross

SHREVEPORT, LA-Gerald Davis Ross was born on November 2, 1931 and passed away on May 13, 2013 in Shreveport. He was a graduate of Fair Park High School, and was a veteran of the United States Army. Following an honorable discharge from military service, Jerry pursued a career in plumbing, eventually becoming a Master Plumber. Jerry spent many years at Bobby L. Greene Plumbing and Heating, after which he became a partner in Horn and Ross Plumbing. He eventually established the Jerry Ross Plumbing Company and was affectionately known in the community as "The Singing Plumber". Jerry served as Associate Council Chairman of the Louisiana Home Builders Association (HBA) in 1982 and President of the Mechanical Contractors Association from 1987 to 1988. In 1982 he received an award for Outstanding Leadership and Dedication to the Development of the HBA Associate Council, in 1985 was named the HBA Associate of the Year, and in 1993 was recognized by Hope Community Church for his dedication to its development. After closing his business, Jerry continued to serve by working at Time It Lube in Customer Service. He was truly valued by the owners, staff, and customers.

Through the gift of music, teaching, and encouragement, Jerry affected many lives over the years, ministering to various congregations throughout the southern region. His deep Christian faith was expressed every day through his unconditional love for others. For the last several years he attended Summer Grove Baptist Church where until recently, he enjoyed singing in both the congregational choir, and the Joy Choir for older adults. After retiring as a Master Plumber, he continued to teach weekly Sunday School and Lead Worship for older adults. His work provided many opportunities to do what he loved most: being with people.

In his private life, he will always be remembered as a dedicated family man. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. In his later years, his love for his grandchildren dominated his life. Poppy, as he was affectionately known, was a routine fixture at his grandchildren's sporting events and school activities, where the friends of his grandchildren quickly became his "adopted" grandchildren. He was never at a loss for hugs and encouragement, and he always made sure that everyone he came in contact with understood that they were special. Poppy has touched many lives, and his legacy will live on through each and every person who was privileged to experience his generosity of spirit and his deep love for others.

Jerry is preceded in death by his mother, Frances Kelly Ross; his father, Joseph Erwood Ross, Sr.; and two brothers, Joseph E. Ross, Jr. and Ronald H. Ross, Sr. Jerry leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, JoAnn Ross; daughter Renee Ross Mainous and her husband Dr. Mark R. Mainous; daughter Dr. Renda Ross and her husband Grant L. Schroeder; grandchildren Michael John Schroeder, JoAnna Ross Schroeder, Eric Ross Mainous, Andrew Ross Schroeder, and George Thomas Mainous; sister Jeanette Mills and her husband, Ronnie, sister Ann Taylor; and numerous nieces & nephews.

The family will receive friends for visitation, Saturday, the 18th of May 2013 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. A Celebration of Jerry's life will be held at Summer Grove Baptist Church, on Sunday, the 19th of May 2013 at 2:00 pm

In lieu of flowers, Jerry's family requested donations be made to "The Wounded Warriors Fund."
