Michael Blackwell Obituary

Michael Paul Blackwell

Michael Paul Blackwell

Shreveport, LA- A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Michael Paul Blackwell, 66, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 30, 2015 in the sanctuary of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Officiating will be Father Michael Thang'wa. Interment will follow in Centuries Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2015 at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home. A vigil/rosary service will be held from 6-6:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Mr. Blackwell was born on July 27, 1949 and passed away on October 26, 2015. Michael was a 1967 graduate of Fair Park High School. After high school he joined the U.S. Navy where he served on the U.S.S. Washtenaw County during the Vietnam War. Following his military service Michael attended LSUS and Centenary College where he earned two Bachelor's Degrees in Business and Education. Mr. Blackwell taught at Haughton Middle School for 23 years and served as the Bossier Association of Education Building Representative for over 20 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1108 where he served as the Financial Secretary and Treasurer. He had become a member of the Broadmoor Council at St. Joseph Catholic Church where he was also a member of Men's Fellowship, Adoration Team and enjoyed the Gourmet Club with wife Ruby. Michael was a member of the Krewe of Centaur where served on the golf committee and bal committee. He rode on the Boeuf Gras Float. In 2000, he served as the Duke of Frolic and has ridden in every parade since 1997. Mr. Blackwell loved to attend Renaissance Festivals with Ruby and friends. He loved animals, was passionate about national parks, conservation and wildlife. He was a cat lover and took wonderful care of his two pet kitties and any strays that came to the porch.

Michael had many fine qualities, but his devotion to family and friends will always be remembered as well as his quirky wit and ready laugh. He will be greatly missed by all who worked with him, by all his Centaur friends and church friends. Most of all, he will be missed by his parents in law to whom he was truly their son and by his wife, Ruby for whom he was her heart.

Mr. Blackwell was preceded in death by his parents, John E. Blackwell and Bernell Frances Bonnette and one brother, David Blackwell.

Left to cherish beautiful memories of Michael are his wife, Ruby Mason Blackwell; father and mother in law, Fred A. Mason, Jr. and Ruby Mason and sister, Patricia Blackwell.

Port Belly Project

October 29, 2015

The secret behind bellydancers? Our bellydance husbands! We are so saddened to lose part of our Port Belly family. Michael Blackwell was one of our biggest cheerleaders. Even when the other husbands had wandered off, Michael remained in his seat so as not to miss a minute of dance with a bright smile and a booming Opa! or two (or more) for encouragement during each and every set. We will always hold Michael close to our hearts. Here's a big OPA! for you Michael and we are going to hold that front row seat for you! Our prayers are with you Ruby.

The Final Salute

Brothers in Arms, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged Hand Salutes as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This Hand Salute is the last that we shall render to Michael Paul Blackwell our Brother-in-Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Michael. And to Michael it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during the Vietnam War while serving in the U.S. Navy. Michael, we commend you for your honorable service. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. You were a true friend. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,061 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion and the 233 veterans of VFW Post 2238 in Shreveport, Louisiana, we extend our sympathies and our condolences to Michael's family and loved ones.
