Thomas Gabel

NEW KNOXVILLE — Thomas L. Gabel, 82, formerly of New Knoxville, died Sunday March 15, 2014 at Gulfside Regional Hospice in Zephyrhills, Fla.

He was born Jan. 9, 1932, in Columbus to William Henry and Ruth (McPherson) Gabel. On Jan. 31, 1953, in Washington, D.C., he married Gloria June McHugh, who died Jan. 2, 2000. He later married Ruth Hildreth in 2001, who survives in Columbus.

He is also survived by daughter Monica (Larry) Wills, of Zephyrhills, Fla., son Harry (Christy Settlage) Gabel, of New Knoxville, son Thomas (Mary Jo Schmiesing) Gabel, of Minster, son Andrew (Nancy Kirkhoff) Gabel, of Spencerville, son John (Laura Raesky) Gabel, of Wapakoneta, son Chris (Gail Gurowski) Gabel, of New Bremen, daughter Meredith (Todd) Pratt, of Spring Hill, Tenn., son Matt (Jill Settlage) Gabel, of New Knoxville, and son Eric (Mia Doty) Gabel, of Mount Vernon; 30 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents William Henry and Ruth Gabel, stepmother Ruth (Wright) Gabel and wife Gloria Gabel.

He was a graduate of Worthington High School and attended The Ohio State University. He retired from Kerry Ingredients Corp. in Covington, where he was plant manager.

A veteran of the United States Marine Corps, he served during the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of the New Knoxville United Methodist Church, and American Legion Post 444 in New Knoxville. Tom was instrumental in the Buckeye Boys' State program, having served as commissioner and program director for 40 years. He was also involved with the Farm Science Review in London for a number of years.

He enjoyed golfing and spending time with his family.

Funeral services are scheduled to begin 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014, at New Knoxville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dennis Gaertner and the Rev. Louis Schmitt, officiating.

Burial, with full graveside military honors, will follow at Pilger Ruhe Cemetery in New Knoxville.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Miller Funeral Home 1605 Celina Road (Ohio 703 West Chapel) in St. Marys.

Memorial contributions may be directed to either Buckeye Boys State, Bethel UMC, or Tom and Gloria Gabel Memorial Scholarship Fund.
