FORT LORAMIE — Alvin J. Schlater, age 79, of Greenback Road, Fort Loramie, Ohio, passed away of natural causes at his residence early Wednesday morning, Feb. 25, 2015.

He was born March 19, 1935, in Fort Loramie, Ohio, to the late Frank and Frances (Hoelscher) Schlater. On April 16, 1958, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Fort Loramie, Al married Nancy (Barhorst) Schlater and she survives.

Also surviving are two children, Deborah and Gregory Martin, of Springfield, and Richard and Patricia Schlater, of Fort Loramie; five grandchildren, Emily, Hannah and Rachel Martin, Tony and Jeri Buschur, Holly and Andy Schafer; five great-grandchildren, Morgan and Troy Buschur, Clayton, Beau and Drew Schafer; one sister, Julie Frey, of Fort Loramie; sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara Schlater, of Defiance, George and Helen Barhorst, of Fort Loramie, and Ted and Anita Barhorst, of Fort Loramie.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Ursula and Robert Platfoot, Emma and Leonard Grilliot, Frieda and Sylvester Pleiman; one brother, Paul Schlater, and a brother-in-law, Vernon Frey.

Al served two, three year terms in the Army National Guard of Ohio. He retired from The Dannon Company in 2006, where he worked 35 years in the maintenance department. He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, the Fort Loramie American Legion Post 355, the Fort Loramie Racing Club, and the Minster Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge 1391. Al was a hard worker, a mechanic, a handy man and an inventor. He took meticulous care of his house, his yard and everything he owned. He loved his family and especially enjoyed attending his grandkids' sporting events.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015, at St. Michael Church in Fort Loramie with the Rev. Steven Shoup presiding.

Friends may call Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Gehret Funeral Home in Fort Loramie.
