SIDNEY — Barbara Ann Smith, 88, of Sidney, passed away at 6:08 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, 2016, at Dorothy Love Retirement Community.

She was born on Dec. 26, 1927, in Andover, Ohio, the daughter of the late Clark and Reba (Cummings) Johnston. She was married to Omar T. Smith, who preceded her in death on Jan. 1, 1995.

Barbara is survived by her two sons, David A. (Elizabeth) Smith, of Johnson City, Tennessee, and Brian D. Smith, of Whitsett, North Carolina; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Bruce W. Smith.

Mrs. Smith was a retired teacher. After graduating from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, she served as an educator throughout Shelby County, specializing in learning disabilities and speech therapy. In 1979 she co-founded FISH (Friends in Service to Humanity) in Sidney. She was also instrumental in starting the Alpha Community Center in Sidney. Barbara was a member of Sidney First United Methodist Church, joining in 1973. She enjoyed traveling, square dancing and time spent with her sons and grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2016, at noon at Cromes-Edwards Funeral Home, 302 S. Main Ave., with the Rev. Jane Madden officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery in Tipp City, Ohio.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
