SIDNEY — Bishop Ernest Lee Wilson went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014.

He was born on June 4, 1940, in Jacksonville, Alabama. Bishop Wilson married the love of his life, the beautiful Vernice Jelks. He is the father of five children, Veronica (Wendell) Wilson-Maclin, of Chicago, Illinois, Edwin Wilson, of Sidney, Cynthia (Eric) Morris, Scott Wilson and Yvette Wilson, all of Jacksonville, Alabama. He was a proud grandfather of six, Elijah, Eleah, Camryn, Emmanuel Wilson, Masscio and Eric Morris.

Bishop Wilson gave his life to Christ in 1965 during a church revival in Sidney and began his ministry later that year, as well. He was a spirit-filled and spirit-led pastor of the Mt. Zion House of Prayer. He was elevated to the overseer of the Mount Zion Holy Union Church of God in October of 2008, churches located in Lima and Sidney, Valdosta, Georgia, Hallandale and Miami, Florida.

He started out working in the local church under the late Pastor W. J. Jones. He worked in the office as trustee chairman, Sunday school teacher, superintendent, youth leader and a Bible study teacher. He was previously the general secretary and served on the board of the late Overseer Elijah Alford. He taught bible study at the Allen County Correction Institute in Lima. He was a member of the Black Scholarship Board, NAACP, SCLC, the Zoning and Planning Committee Board in Sidney.

Bishop Wilson was preceded in death by his parents, Walker and Ernestine (Snow) Wilson; four brothers; and four sisters.

He retired from Alcoa Products in 2002 after 20 years of service. He also worked part time for the Shelby County Transit Authority. He enjoyed golfing, reading, riding his bike and playing with his grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his "brothers" brother-in-laws, John (Doris) Jelks and John (Tina) Glover; nieces; nephews; special friend, Rick Holloway; godchildren, Pastor William, Stephanie Meredith and Earlene Foster.

Family will receive friends Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Adams Funeral Home, 1401 Fair Road, Sidney.

The home-going celebration for Bishop Wilson will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 15, 2014, at the Mount Zion House of Prayer, where he pastored, 324 Grove St., Sidney,. Bishop V. T. Hardin, eulogist, Summerville, Georgia, is officiating.

Interment will be at Graceland Cemetery, 975 S. Main St., Sidney. Professional services entrusted to the Adams Funeral Home ( In lieu of flowers, the Wilson family respectfully requests that memorial donations be made to the Mount Zion House of Prayer in Bishop Wilson's memory.
