Eugene Rickert (1932 - 2014)

BOTKINS — Eugene G. Rickert, 82, of Botkins, passed away at 5:10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, at Fair Haven County Home.

He was born on May 27, 1932, in Shelby County, Ohio, the son of the late Irvin George and Lauretta (Evans) Rickert.

On Dec. 21, 1952, he was married to Mary C. Grilliot, who survives him, along with their four children: Michael (Karla) Rickert, of Kettlersville, Linda (David) Hoying,of McCartyville, Scott (Mary Ann) Rickert, of Anna, and LuAnn Rickert, of Kettlersville; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister, Lois Davis, of Botkins, and one sister-in-law, Patricia Rickert, of Jackson Center.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Lowell Rickert.

Mr. Rickert was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict, and a member of the 46th Taam Troubleshooters Division. He was a member of the Anna American Legion Post 446, where he served as past post commander. Gene was also a member of the Reindeer Owners and Breeders Association. He was a faithful member of St. Jacob Lutheran Church in Anna, where he served on the church council and various committees over the years. Gene was a lifelong farmer, an avid outdoorsman and animal lover. He enjoyed time with his family, especially his grandchildren, spending time with his reindeer, and the company of his devoted dog, Taco.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2014, at 10 a.m. at St. Jacob Lutheran Church in Anna, with the Rev. Michael Althauser officiating. Burial will be at Pearl Cemetery in Swanders. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Cromes Funeral Home 302 S. Main Ave., Sidney, and at the church on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of service.
