George Groff

SIDNEY — George R. Groff, 92, of 813 Taylor Drive, passed away at 3 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Wilson Memorial Hospital.

He was born on Dec. 11, 1921 in Russia, Ohio, the son of the late Albert and Genevieve (Francis) Groff. On Aug. 3, 1950, he was married to Alberta "Bertie" Wooddell in Jackson Center, Ohio. She preceded him in death on Dec. 20, 1978. His loving companion of many years, Patricia "Peg" Presser, also preceded him in death on Nov. 7, 2004.

George is survived by his daughter, Jacqueline "Jackie" (Tony) Bergman of Fort Recovery, Ohio; granddaughter, Shawna (Steve) Carney of Fort Recovery; three grandsons, Robert (Ann) Bergman, of Geneva, Ind., Dennis Bergman and Joseph (Gwen) Bergman, both of Fort Recovery; 11 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; brother, Norbert (Rita) Groff, of Tipp City, Ohio; sister, Mary Jane (Wally) Carey, of Piqua; two brothers-in-law, John (Ruth) Wooddell, of Southern Pines, N.C., and Arthur (Janice) Huelskamp, of Fort Recovery; sister-in-law, Ann Wooddell, of Chesapeake, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren, and eight siblings.

Mr. Groff was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps, serving during World War II. He worked for Everyday Manufacturing in Sidney for 24 years, retiring in 1985. He was active in veterans' organizations, American Legion Post 217 where he served as past commander, and Shelby County VFW Post 4239. He was also treasurer of the Monumental Building renovation and trustee of the Senior Center in Sidney.

George was a long-time member of Holy Angels Catholic Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 4, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Daniel Schmitmeyer officiating. Private burial with full military honors by the American Legion Post 217 will take place at Graceland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Friday, from 9 until 10:15 a.m. at Cromes Funeral Home, 302 S. Main Ave.
