James Harpest (1940 - 2016)

WAPAKONETA — James R. Harpest, 75, of Wapakoneta, formerly of Shelby County, died at 8:35 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016, in Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Care Center.

He was born May 4, 1940, in Auglaize County, the son of Edwin and Nellie (Mosler) Harpest, who preceded him in death. On June 2, 1962, he married Marlene D. (Schamp) Harpest, and she survives in Wapakoneta.

Other survivors include, a son, Todd (Deb) Harpest, of Seneca, South Carolina; two grandsons, Joshua and Jordan Harpest; a brother, Richard "Dick" (Arlene) Harpest, of Marietta, Georgia; two brothers-in-law, Maynard (Betty) Schamp Jr., of St. Marys, and Don (Sylvia-dec.) Prueter, of New Knoxville; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Jim retired as manager of Norandex Reynolds, Sidney. Prior to that, he had worked as a draftsman, architect and salesman at Hoge Lumber, Crouse Lumber and Anna Lumber Co. Most recently, he had worked with the city of Wapakoneta Engineering Department.

He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wapakoneta. Jim had served as mayor of Anna, and was an EMT with the Anna Rescue Squad. He had also served on the Shelby County Regional Planning Board, the American Red Cross and worked diligently and successfully to have Honda locate in Anna. He enjoyed traveling in his motor home, wood carving, playing cards and most especially spending time with his family.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2016, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wapakoneta, the Rev. Patrick Sloneker officiating.

The family will receive friends after the Mass at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorial contributions be directed to the Community Health Professionals, 1155 Westwood Drive, Van Wert, OH 45891, or the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 309 S.
