DEGRAFF — James Paul Hengsteler, 91, of DeGraff, passed away at 11:35 a.m. on Friday, May 19, 2017, at Logan Acres Care Center in Bellefontaine, Ohio.

He was born in Zanesfield, Ohio on May 23, 1925, to the late Leroy A. and Florence Eva (Blue) Hengsteler.

On Nov. 13, 1943, Jim married the former Betty Jane Valentine-Kost and she preceded him in death on March 24, 1994. He was also preceded in death by a great-grandson Dezmon Retterer; two brothers, William and Robert Hengsteler; and a nephew, John Hengsteler.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Joyce (John) Baker, of Troy; two grandsons, Curtis (April) Retterer, of South Carolina, and Christopher (Shannon) Retterer, of Sidney; two great-grandchildren, Christian and Kirsten; a sister, Lina (Robert) Jackson, of DeGraff; and several nieces and nephews.

A U.S. Navy World War II veteran, Jim was a 1943 graduate of DeGraff High School. After returning from the service, he worked at the DeGraff Lumber Company as a carpenter for 45 years. He was also a member of the DeGraff United Methodist Church.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Universal Home Health & Hospice Care and Logan Acres for the exceptional care they provided to Jim.

The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at the Daring & Sanford Funeral Home, 210 W. Hayes St., DeGraff, Ohio. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with Pastor Floyd Lundy officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood-Union Cemetery in DeGraff, Ohio.

Memorial contributions may be made, in Jim's memory, to the DeGraff United Methodist Church, 1839 County Road 24 S., DeGraff, OH 43318.
