SIDNEY — Janet Firestone, 70, of Sidney, passed away at 6:10 p.m. Friday, April 7, 2017, at The Ohio State University Medical Center.

She was born on May 25, 1946, in Tarentum, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Edward Trofka and Gertrude Elizabeth (Geiser) Trofka, who resides in Cabot, Pennsylvania.

On Dec. 23, 1966, she married William Firestone, who survives along with two daughters, Dara (Dino) Valdez, of Hesston, Kansas, and Carla (Jeff) Nowak, of Perrysburg, Ohio; four grandchildren, Taylor and Mikayla Valdez, and Reed and Julia Nowak; and one sister, Judy (Charles) Wisner, of Tarentum, Pennsylvania.

Janet was a nurse, which was so fitting for her because she was a consummate caregiver and never missed an opportunity to give back. She spent most of her career in community health, ending with the job she had the most passion for — hospice nursing. She took care of the sickest of the sick and brought much peace to so many families.

Janet and her husband Bill became parents to dozens of foster children, ensuring these sons and daughters could join their own two daughters and have a solid Christian family experience. For decades, Janet taught Sunday School to babies and toddlers — living her belief that no one is too young to learn about the wonders of Jesus. She volunteered countless hours providing grief support to young children who had lost family members — helping these children grieve and recover.

Janet was well known for adopting individuals and families in unique circumstances. Her daughters often joked that they never knew who would be showing up for a holiday dinner. The Bowden family holds a very special place in Janet and Bill's hearts. The Bowden's — Lucas and Stephanie and their children, Reed, Beau, Cole and Jett — became an extension of the Firestone family. Janet's own daughters are forever grateful for the love, kindness and family time that the Bowden family gave to Janet.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Janet's life will be held on Sunday, May 21, 2017, from 1 to 3p.m. at Cromes-Edwards Funeral Home, 302 S. Main Ave., Sidney.
