NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — John Phelps Fitzwater, 63, of New Smyrna Beach Florida, died Jan. 27, 2015, at home of liver cancer.

He was born June 10, 1951, in Sidney, Ohio, the son of Paul and Ruth (Phelps) Fitzwater. He was a nurse at Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Center in Daytona FL.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Jackson, and his brother-in-law, Gary Parke.

He is survived by his wife, Dulce (Dee), and son, Jonathan, of New Smyrna Beach Florida. He also is survived by his sisters, Jane Fitzwater Parke (Gary, deceased) of Kingwood, Texas, Julie Fitzwater Preuninger (Eb), of Asheville, North Carolina, and Jean Fitzwater Bussell (Harold), of West Manchester, Ohio. He also is survived by two stepsons, Thomas and PJ Mauro and stepdaughter Jamie Magnuson, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

John graduated from Lindsay Wilson College and Georgetown College in Kentucky. He received a master's degree from Western Kentucky University. He also earned a nursing degree from Central Piedmont Community College and spent many years working in intensive care units as well as long-term care facilities. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed sharing his love of sports with his son.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Feb. 9, 2015, at the Sacred Heart Church in New Smyrna Beach Florida.
