VERSAILLES — John Edward Mader, 93, of Versailles, Ohio, passed away at 5:55 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, 2014, at Versailles Health Care Center. He was born Jan. 18, 1921, to the late Clarence and Minnie (Feitshans) Mader on a farm outside Versailles, Ohio.

He was married to Jeanne Rae Niswonger on June 24, 1967, at the Lutheran Church in Sidney. She survives him, along with nephew Ted (Kim) Jones, of Glen Falls, New York, and Paul and Rhonola Strobel, of Minster.

John graduated from Houston High School in 1939. In 1940 he got a State Farmers degree.

He then joined the U.S. Army in 1942, where he was a member of 150th Ordinance Motor Vehicle Assembly and also on detached service with the 250th Army Remount shipping horses to Calcutta, India. There were 600 head of horses, and they were 46 days at sea. John also served in Australia, New Caledonia, Philippines and Japan. He was discharged from the army Jan. 16, 1946. John was a T/4 in the Army. He and Jeanne Rae hosted the 150th Ordinance reunion at the Holiday Inn in Sidney for six years. John was also a lifetime member of the VFW Post 4239. He worked for General Motors for eight years and was also an agent for Ohio Mutual for 40 years. He began farming in 1955. John was a member of the Shelby County Fair Board for 24 years serving in the Swine and Speed department. He worked as an associate judge and timer at the Shelby County Fair for over 50 years. John belonged to a number of state livestock associations, namely Secretary of the Ohio State Chester White Swine Association, and was one of the original members of the American Belgian Horse Association. He also raised and bred Dorset Sheep for 60 years.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014, at 1 p.m. at Cromes Funeral Home, 302 S. Main Ave., with the Rev. Harold McKnight officiating. Burial with full military honors by the U.S. Army will be at Cedar Point Cemetery in Pasco. The family will receive friends on Monday, from 2 to 6 p.m.
