ST. MARYS — Lois Rardon Edler, died at Otterbein St. Marys on Jan. 31, 2016, in St. Marys, Ohio after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was 85.

Mrs. Edler was born on Oct. 16, 1930, in a farmhouse along the Little Sandy in West Virginia to her parents, Charles and Dessie Rardon. She met her husband while attending Marshall College (now Marshall University). The couple was married on Jan. 7, 1951.

Lois graduated from Marshall College with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1952. Shortly after graduation, Shearl served a 2-year stint in the army while Lois began her teaching career in one of the last one room school house operating in the state of West Virginia. Eventually, Shearl and Lois moved to Sidney, Ohio, where Lois began her 33-year career as an elementary educator teaching kindergarten, second-, third-, and first-grades in Emerson, Lowell, Orange Township and Whittier Elementary Schools. She retired in 1991.

In 2006, the Edlers moved to St. Marys to live at Otterbein St. Marys. The education of the children of Sidney, Ohio, was her passion. She loved teaching and shaping young lives. She was instrumental in developing an individualized reading program which allowed first-grade students to make gains in reading based upon their own skills and abilities. Due to this interest, she went on to earn her Masters in Reading from Wright State University.

Mrs. Edler is survived by her husband of 65 years, Shearl Edler; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Lee Werts, of St. Marys, Ohio; a son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren, David, Abby, Marc and Marisa Edler of Vernon Hills, Illinois; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Shannon Edler, of Chicago; her sister, Jean Riggs, of Parkersburg, West Virginia; a brother and sister-in-law, Earl and Mary Ellen, of Piedmont, South Carolina; and a second brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Ginger Rardon, of Ashland, Kentucky.

She is preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law, Pat Riggs.

Mrs. Edler will be buried in a private ceremony on Monday, Feb. 8, 2016, at Graceland Cemetery in Sidney, Ohio.

A memorial service will take place on Feb. 8, 2016, at 10 a.m. in the Meyer Room at Otterbein St. Marys (11230 State Route 364, St. Marys, Ohio) with the Rev. Vince Lavieri officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday from 9 to 10 a.m. in the Meyer Room. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mrs. Edler's life.
