HOUSTON — Louis S. Mertz Sr., age 68, passed away of natural causes Saturday evening, June 11, 2016, at his state Route 47, Houston, Ohio, residence.

He was born Aug. 23, 1947, in Sidney, Ohio, to the late Anthony and Elizabeth (Benanzer) Mertz. On June 26, 1965, at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sidney, Louis married Mary (Shroyer) Mertz who survives.

Also surviving are three children, Latonda and Anthony Longendelpher, of Jacksonville, Florida, Latina and Ken Phyillaier, of Sidney, Louis Jr. and Tina Mertz, of Houston; seven grandchildren, Nichole and Michael Walker, Marlana and Elizabeth Longendelpher, Brandan Phyillaier and fiancee Samantha Forman, Megan Phyillaier, Emma and Eliza Mertz; nine siblings, Frances Long, of St. Marys, Dolores Rutt, of Chesapeake, Carl and Angela Mertz, of Harker Heights, Texas, Richard and Theresa Mertz, of Sundance, Wyoming, Carol and Dave Cruse, of Springboro, Albert and Kathy Mertz, of Sidney, Angela and Michael Kittel, of New Knoxville, Bonnie Butt, of Sidney, and Elizabeth Immel, of Sidney; stepsiblings, Larry and Linda, Fred, Norman and Phyllis Goode; and a sister-in-law, Marcy Gates, of Sidney.

He was preceded in death by three grandchildren, Brooke Phyillaier, Shelby and Gabrielle Mertz; two sisters, Rita Brown and Mary Long, as well as several brothers and sisters in-law.

Mr. Mertz retired in 2010 from Mertz Excavating that he owned and operated for 19 years. He had been previously employed at Sidney Tool & Die for 27 years. He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. In his leisure, Louis enjoyed woodworking and gardening.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 17, 2016, at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Newport with the Rev. Steven Shoup presiding. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Friends may call Thursday 3 to 8 p.m. and Friday 9 to 10 a.m. at Gehret Funeral Home in Fort Loramie.
