Marie Elsass (1922 - 2017)

NEW BREMEN — Marie R. Elsass, age 94, formerly of near Anna, and a resident of the Elmwood Assisted Living in New Bremen for the past year, died on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, at 3:45 a.m. at the Elmwood Assisted Living.

She was born on April 4, 1922, near New Bremen. She was the daughter of the late Franklin Tangeman and Martha (Rudebusch) Tangeman-Hirschfeld, and her stepfather Henry Hirschfeld,, whom her mother had married after the death of Franklin when Marie was 3 years old. On June 21, 1941, she married Richard K. Elsass in Kettlersville, and he died on Aug. 23, 1980.

Surviving are her children, Dorothy (Stanley) Fogt, of Sidney, and William (Bonnie) Elsass, of Anna; her grandchildren, DeAnna (Rick) Ankrom, Donna Russell, Mark (Lori) Elsass, Melissa (William) Wells and Monica (Ted) Berning; 16 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great- grandchildren; her sisters, Martha Ann (Ken) Thomas, of Bucyrus, and Lucille Meyer, of Botkins; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by five great-great-grandchildren, her brothers, LeRoy Tangeman, Merlin, Louis and Wilson Hirschfeld.

Marie was a 1940 graduate of Anna High School. She had been a member of Immanuel Church in Kettlersville since 1937. There she was active in the Women's Guild, and sang in the church choir for many years. The church meant a lot to Marie, and was a large part of her life. She was a charter member of the homemakers club called The Anna Work & Do Club for 40 years, which was affiliated with the Home Extension Clubs of Shelby County. She was active with the Anna Community Grange, and the Granges of Shelby County for over 60 years. She was a homemaker, and helped on the family farm her entire life.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at the Immanuel Church in Kettlersville with Pastor Ed Rinehart officiating. Interment will follow in the Pearl Cemetery, near Sidney.

Calling Hours will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2017, from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home in New Bremen, and one hour prior to the time of the services Thursday at the church.

The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Immanuel Church Memorial Fund.
