RUSSELLS POINT — Richard "Dick" Shape, 89, of Russells Point, Ohio, passed away on Friday evening, Sept. 11, 2015, at OSU Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, OH.

Dick was born on Sept. 17, 1925, in Belle Center, Ohio, to the late Carl and Lenore Walls Shape. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Russell, Edward, James, John, and Paul and two sisters, Lois Hastings, and Dorothy Shape.

On Oct. 28, 1947, he married the former Joan Frederick in Kentucky and she preceded him in death in 2006. On Oct. 31, 2007, he married the former Martha Baker and she survives.

He is survived by a daughter, Nancy (Jim) Verne, of Upper Arlington, Ohio; two sons, Jerry (Susan) Shape, of Lakeview, Ohio, and Steven (Dawn) Shape, of Columbus; four grandchildren, Laura Houchins, Jimmy Verne, Jennifer Scott and Seth Shape; four great-grandchildren, Brittany Houchins, Breann Houchins, Alyssa Scott and Brayden Scott; three sisters, Clara Herring, Ann Smith, Frances Webb; one brother, Robert Shape; and several nieces and nephews.

Dick received his high school diploma as a member of Ben Logan High School Class of 2007 due to joining the United States Army during World War II prior to graduating from Rushsylvania High School. He served in the European Theater, including the Battle of the Bulge and was a Purple Heart recipient from wounds sustained near Breast, France.

Dick was self-employed most of his life. He owned a Shape's Gulf in Kenton for 15 years, was part owner of H &L Auto parts in Bellefontaine, Ohio, and then Jackson Center Auto Parts until retiring in 1988. He was a member of Indian Lake Community Church in Russells Point, Harold Kerr American Legion Post 173 in Bellefontaine, Roundhead VFW Post 8832 and life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He enjoyed traveling to Canada, Iowa, and Florida, fishing and watching ballgames.

The Rev. Jim Ellington will begin a memorial service at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, 2015, at Shoffstall Funeral Home, 205 S. Main St., Lakeview, with visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Inurnment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Belle Center at a later date.
