SIDNEY — The Rev. Robert T. Bumgarner, 98, of Sidney, passed away at 11 p.m., Thursday, June 1, 2017, at Ohio Living Dorothy Love.

He entered this world on Dec. 6, 1918, in Richwood, the firstborn of four sons to the late John and Oma (Roush) Bumgarner. On Oct. 14, 1940, he married M. Ruth Lathey. They were married on the bank of the Ohio River by the bride's father, the Rev. V.J. Lathey. After 60 years of marriage, she preceded him in death, May 6, 2001.

Robert is survived by three children, Barbara (David) Geuy, Ruth Ann (James) Chrisman, both of Sidney, and Dallas (Gayla) Bumgarner, of St. Paris; daughter-in-law, Ada Bumgarner; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Robert L. Bumgarner; one great-grandchild; and three brothers, Dallas L., Harold L., and Leland C. Bumgarner.

In 1945, after five years of marriage and the addition of two children, he felt the call to the ministry and served the five-church Rock Castle Charge in Jackson County, West Virginia. During the winters, the muddy roads required the use of a horse, thus he became a circuit riding preacher. After having four children, and relocating to Findlay, he pastored two country churches while attending and graduating from Findlay College. He served as a minister most of his life, even serving part time for four years at the Lockington United Methodist Church, following his retirement.

In his later years, he enjoyed golfing and mostly spending time with his family. Robert was a member of the West Ohio United Methodist Conference. He was also a member of Stokes Lodge No. 305 F&AM and OES, as well as the High Twelve Club in Sidney.

Robert attended Pasco United Methodist Church where a funeral service will be Monday, June 5, 2017, at 11 a.m.with his son-in-law, James Chrisman officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Point Cemetery.

The family will receive friends, Sunday, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Cromes-Edwards Funeral Home. A Masonic service will be at the funeral home, Sunday, at 2:45 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pasco United Methodist Church, Wilson Hospice Care or Ohio Living Dorothy Love Lifecare Fund in Robert's memory. Guestbook condolences and expressions of sympathy may be made to the Bumgarner family at the website, www.cromesfh.com.
