Russell Herring

BELLEFONTAINE — Russell Lee Herring, 87, of Bellefontaine and formerly of Russells Point, passed away Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016, at Heartland of Bellefontaine.

He was born Dec. 31, 1928, in Urbana, a son of the late Truman Dunn Herring and Florence Mae Longshore. On Sept. 3, 1978, he married the former Norma L. Wallace Summers, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 28, 2013. He is also preceded in death by his stepmother, Luella Herring; a sister, Joan Shepherd; two brothers, James Minor Herring and Robert T. Herring; and a stepson, Robert Summers.

He is survived by three children by his first wife, Phyllis J. Rambo, who are Karen (Terry) Brown, of DeGraff, Ronnie (Tammy) Herring, of Lakeview, and Brenda (Robert Sr.) Grumbling, of Russells Poin; three stepchildren, Rodney (Terri) Summers, Shane (Kim) Summers and Cheri Alltop; eight grandchildren, Shelby (Kyle) Brown, Linda Little, Melissa (Rich) Spires, Jamie (Jim) Marshall, Nicole (Jordan) Tanner, Robert (Megan) Grumbling Jr., Michael (Stephanie) Grumbling and Richard (Caitlyn) Grumbling, 10 stepgrandchildren, Janie, Ashley, Rod "Roddie," Jill, Austin, Sierra and Johnny Summers, Brison, Beau and Brianna Swank; several great-grandchildren; a brother, Ronnie Johns, of Springfield; a stepbrother, Thurman D. Herring, of Lakeview; a daughter-in-law, Cathy Summers, of Bellefontaine; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Russell retired from Airstream in 1994 after 35 years of service. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. Russell was a life member of the Indian Lake Fish & Game Club and former member of the Indian Joint Fire Department, serving as chief in the early 1960s. He enjoyed fishing, especially his fishing trips to Minnesota and Wisconsin, going to auctions, mushroom hunting, playing pool and meeting with his friends at McDonald's in Russells Point. When he was younger, he enjoyed taking his family camping and to Florida during Christmas. He was fondly known for his whistling and by his grandchildren as "Grandpa Butt Pincher."

Pastor Dana Kidder will begin funeral services at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 2, 2016, at Shoffstall Funeral Home, 205 S. Main St., Lakeview.

Visitation is Tuesday, March 1, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home with a fireman's service at 8 p.m. Burial is in Huntsville Cemetery with military honors provided by the Logan County Veterans Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given in his name to Indian Lake Fish and Game Club, 1055 State Route 708, Russells Point, OH.
