SIDNEY — Virgil C. Soder, 91, of 601 St. Marys Ave., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013, at 5:03 p.m. at the Fair Haven County Home.

He was born on May 31, 1922, in Botkins, the son of the late Charles and Lavina (Bernhold) Soder.

On Jan. 29, 1948, he married Irene A. Vourlas, who preceded him in death on July 1, 1984. He is survived by three children, Patrick and Linda (Aikin) Soder, of Sidney, Mrs. Stan (Rita) Schlater, of Versailles, and John Soder, of Sidney; daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen (Bornhorst) Soder-Frey and husband, Al, of Wapakoneta; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, David and James Soder; one brother, Harold Soder; and two sisters, Charlotte (Soder) Slonkosky and La Vera (Soder) Weigandt.

Mr.Soder farmed in his early years before joining the Merchant Marines from 1944 to 1946. Virgil was employed by the former Monarch Machine Tool Co. for 35 years in Sidney as a machinist until his retirement in 1984.

He was as member of Sidney American Legion Post 217 and was a lifetime member of Holy Angels Catholic Church. Virgil enjoyed all sports, also bowling, dancing, and playing cards with his friends.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sidney with the Rev. Daniel Schmitmeyer officiating.

Burial with full military honors will be held at Graceland Cemetery in Sidney.

Friends may call Sunday 1 to 4 p.m. at the Cromes Funeral Home, 302 S. Main Ave.
