Wallace Hirschfeld (1923 - 2015)

NEW BREMEN — Wallace E. "Wally" Hirschfeld, 92, of New Bremen, died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2015, at 11:15 a.m., at Elmwood Assisted Living of New Bremen.

He was born on April 11, 1923, near Chickasaw in Mercer County to the late Victor E. and Amanda (Topp) Hirschfeld. On April 27, 1946, he married Edna L. Wiehe, who died on April 17, 1985. Survivors include his children, Judy Hirschfeld, of Upper Arlington, Bryan (Donna Jones) Hirschfeld, of St. Marys, and Eric (Janna) Hirschfeld, of St. Marys; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Shirley (Don) Luedeke, of New Bremen. Along with his wife, Wally was preceded in death by a son, Craig Hirschfeld, and his sisters, Eldora Orwig and Gloria Katterheinrich.

Wally was a member of First Church-New Knoxville, and had attended St. Paul United Church of Christ in New Bremen. He was a 1940 graduate of Memorial High School of St. Marys. Wally was a lifelong farmer and was also active with the Ohio Farm Bureau. He was first elected to the Farm Bureau in 1963, where he served six years on the board as a representative of District 10. He then went on to be elected president of the Farm Bureau. Through the Farm Bureau, he was also nominated as a representative to Brazil in search of gasohol. He served six years on the Nationwide Insurance Board, and was appointed by Governor Rhodes to a trade mission to Europe. He served with Farmers World Affairs and spent 46 days covering 2,000 miles in India. He enjoyed woodworking, planting trees, traveling, polka dancing, and at age 90, wrote a book about his life, titled "From the Mud Road to the Moon."

Funeral services will be Monday, Nov. 30, 2015, at 10:30 a.m., in the Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home of New Bremen with the Rev. Becky Erb Strang officiating. Interment will follow in the German Protestant Cemetery of New Bremen.

Calling hours will be Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015, from 2 to 5 p.m., at the Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home in New Bremen, and one hour prior to the services on Monday. Condolences to the Hirschfeld family may be left online at
