MARIA STEIN — Werner J. Bruggeman, age 88, of Erie Drive, Maria Stein, passed away of natural causes Sunday afternoon, Feb. 9, 2014, at Celina Manor, in Celina, Ohio.

He was born Dec. 13, 1925, in Coldwater, Ohio, to the late Edward and Catherine (Buening) Bruggeman. On April 18, 1951, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in McCartyville, Werner married Dolores (Barhorst) Bruggeman who survives.

Also surviving are 11 children, Gerald and Kathleen Bruggeman, of Celina, Carol and Philip Borchers, of Russia, Annette and Daniel Heyne, of Coldwater, Marcia Neff, of Fort Recovery, Nancy and David Unrast, of Maria Stein, Anthony and Linda Bruggeman, of New Bremen, Mark Bruggeman, of Dayton, Angela and Edward Petty, of Russia, Julia and Chad Kaiser, of Fort Recovery, Beverly Bruggeman, of New Bremen, Janel and Jeffrey Selhorst, of Coldwater; 39 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren; five siblings, Velma and Leonard Dietz, of St. Marys, Virginia Bruggeman, of Portland, Ind., Mary Pierron, of Osgood, Howard and Marlene Bruggeman, of Maria Stein, Larry and Becky Bruggeman, of Maria Stein; sisters and brothers-in-law, Doris Bruggeman, of Maria Stein, Kay Bruggeman, of St. Marys, Clarissa Barhorst, of Russia, Clarissa Brinkman, of Missouri, Lavern Schmit, of Celina, Joseph and Wilma Barhorst, of Coldwater, Clarence Barhorst, of Botkins, Marilyn and Ralph Meyer, of Coldwater, Emily Subler, of Versailles, Ivo Braun, of Portland, Ind., and Martha and Richard Subler, of New Bremen.

He was preceded in death by one son-in-law, David Neff; four brothers, (twin) Virgil, Donald, (infants) Edward and Harold Bruggeman and one sister, Eileen Otting; brothers-in-law, Joseph Pierron, Kenneth Otting and Lavern Bruggeman, and one sister-in-law, Mary Bruggeman.

Werner retired in 1973 from Beatrice Foods in New Bremen where he had been employed 28 years; he had also worked 14 years at Borchers Poultry in Russia. He had been a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. At his leisure, Werner enjoyed playing the guitar and harmonica, entertaining his grandchildren at family gatherings.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at St. John the Baptist Church in Maria Stein with the Rev. Gene Schnipke presiding. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Friends may call Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. and Friday 9 to 9:45 a.m. at Gehret Funeral Home in Fort Loramie.
