SIDNEY — Darrell Edward Applegate, 82, 744 Brooklyn Ave., Lot 14, Sidney, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013, at 7 a.m. at Wilson Memorial Hospital of a sudden illness.
He was born July 12, 1931, in Sidney, the son of Robert and Catherine (Spangler) Applegate, and they are deceased. He married Mary Rike on Nov. 9, 1963, and she survives in Sidney. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Surviving also are a son, Robin Applegate, of Sidney; a daughter, Darcy Winchester, and her husband, Pete, of Sidney; a stepdaughter, Sheila Todd, of Sidney; and a stepson, John Todd, of Lakeside, Calif. Also surviving are a sister, Zelma Jones, of Sidney; six grandchildren, Jeremy Todd, Charisa Todd, Jay Todd, Keith Blas, Luke Applegate and Nicole McCluskey; and six great-grandchildren. One son, Brett Applegate; two stepsons, Jeffrey Todd and Jim Todd; one sister, Dorothy Applegate; and three brothers, Leo, Eugene and Keith Applegate are deceased.
Mr. Applegate was a 1949 graduate of Sidney High School. He had worked at Liberty Folder and then worked for LeRoi-Dresser in Sidney for 32 years. He later worked at Walmart, K-Mart and Staples. He was a United States Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Sidney American Legion, VFW and AMVETS and was a member of the North Broadway Church of Christ in Sidney.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, at the North Broadway Church of Christ, 2655 Broadway Ave., Sidney, at 1:30 p.m., with Evangelist Brent Wright. Burial with full military honors will follow at Glen Cemetery, Port Jefferson.
Friends may call at Salm-McGill and Tangeman Funeral Home in Sidney on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, from 2 to 4 p.m.
