James "Marty" Butler

1954 – 2013

James "Marty" Butler, age 58 of Sonora, CA died Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at Doctor's Hospital in Modesto, CA. After a courageous 10 year battle with complications due to a stroke, Marty passed away from a heart attack. He was scheduled to have open heart surgery the day he passed.

Marty was born December 4, 1954 in Lynwood, CA. to James and Ann Butler. Marty spent many of his childhood summers at his Grandma Bo's cabin in Big Bear Lake with his family, aunts, uncles and cousins. He attended Wm. S. Hart High School in Newhall, CA. where he excelled in football, wrestling, and track. He continued his education at College of the Canyons in Valencia, CA.

He married Kathie Barrick on May 7, 1977 in Newhall, CA. They raised their three children: Michael, Brooke and Paige, in Newhall before moving to Sonora, CA in 1990. Marty was a power plant operator for El Paso Energy until 2004 when he suffered a massive stroke.

Marty is survived by his loving wife Kathie; beloved children: Michael Butler and wife Jenny, Brooke Bentzinger and husband Kevin, and Paige Pletcher and husband Nate, all of Sonora CA; mother Ann Butler and sister Beth Asmus; in-laws Craig and Mike Barrick, Karen and Ruben Alvarez, Chuck Asmus; nieces and nephews: McKenna, Matthew, Travis, Rachael, and Marc; great niece Lyla; step grandchildren: Lexi, Halye and Bridger Bentzinger; countless other friends and family whom were blessed to know him. He was preceded in death by his father James Butler and his in-laws Harold and Mary Barrick.

Marty never met a stranger. He loved listening to classic rock and roll music, playing the guitar, camping, laughing, and being with his family, having fun with friends. He was an avid fan of the Steelers and the Dodgers. Marty touched the lives of many people with his smile and courage, and maintained his trademark sense of humour all the way to the end.

Friends and family are invited to attend a Celebration of Life memorial service (potluck) on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Posse Grounds, 19130 Rawhide Road, Jamestown, CA 95373. The family requests that attendees wear their favourite rock and roll t-shirts.
