1926 – 2013

Alfred Richard "Dick" Bongard, of Valencia, CA died peacefully at home on Sunday, January 13, 2013.

He was born Alfred Louis Kleinschmidt on September 28, 1926 in Pittsburg, KS. He was adopted by his stepfather Marshal Latimore Bongard in 1942 and changed his name at that time. Dick was married to Isobel Audrey Bongard on May 11, 1955.

Alfred "Dick" lived in India from the age of 3-10 with his parents who were missionaries for Aimie Sempel McPhereson's Los Angeles Four Square Gospel Church. He graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School in June of 1943 and from Los Angeles City College in April 1948. He served in the Army Air Corps from February 1945 to November 1946. On April 26, 1948 Dick graduated at the top of his class from the Los Angeles Police Academy and retired as a Lieutenant II in 1978. Dick was the Lieutenant-in-Charge of the Crime Prevention Section in the LAPD and developed, with Sgt. Lee Kirkwood, the Neighborhood Watch crime prevention program which was eventually taken nationwide by the National Sheriff's Association. He was passionate about the protection of children and worked tirelessly to protect them in the Juvenile division of the LAPD, earning him the name "Mr. Juvenile".

Dick is survived by his wife, Isobel Audrey Bongard of Santa Clarita, CA and his daughters Janice Ann Donyanavard of Santa Clarita, CA and Debra Gayle Bongard of Long Beach, CA. He is also survived by four grandchildren.

Dick will be cremated and buried at sea at a later date. A memorial and celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2013.
