Raymond C. Huffman Obituary
1918 - 2014

Raymond C. Huffman, 95, of Agua Dulce, CA, passed away quietly on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at his home and with his family at his side. Ray was born in Flint, MI to Philip and Stella Huffman on August 18, 1918.

Ray graduated from Pontiac High School in 1936 and in 1938 enlisted in the Navy where he was assigned to the USS Phoenix. It was there that he manned a gun during the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. During World War II, he was also involved in operations in the Southwest Pacific against the Japanese Fleet. He rose to the position of Chief Gunner's Mate.

After the war, he worked in the movie industry as a carpenter and later as a heavy construction Superintendent on various public works which included the Hoover Dam Project. He married Jean Brychell during this time. They were married for over 40 years and resided in Silver Lakes, CA for more than 25 years. He cared for her during her illness and until her death in 1999.

Ray married Raquel V. Zamora on June 24, 2000. At the time, he promised her ten good years. He gave her 13 wonderful years. Ray liked to play golf, read voraciously, loved to play cards and go to Las Vegas, and, in his later years, sit in front of our beautiful Agua Dulce view. His favorite activity was the family dinners we had every Sunday.

If there were just a few words to describe Ray they would be: humble, proud patriotic veteran, honorable, generous, family man ~ he was truly one of the Greatest Generation.

Ray was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, the USS Phoenix Association, and the Elks Association.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents Philip and Stella and his siblings: Philip, Mable, Beatrice, and Frances.

Ray is survived by his beloved wife, Raquel Huffman; his daughter and son-in-law Sonia and Glen Marygold and grandson Daniel Marygold of Agua Dulce, CA; nephews: Gary Huffman and wife June of Haslett, MI; Robert Moorman and wife Riba of Fresno, CA; numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews in Michigan.

Services were held on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at the Riverside Veterans' Memorial Park with the Honor Guard in attendance.
