1928 –2013

Norma Frances Stecyk, age 84, of Santa Clarita, CA died on Saturday, January 5, 2013.

Born on March 9, 1928 to William and Doris Ryder in Manchester England, Norma Ryder came of age during the great Second World War. She survived the German blitz with her mother and brother while her father served as a Sergeant Major in the Royal Engineers Reserves. During the war, she met Ruben J. Cortinas, a soldier from Texas who was stationed in England with the U.S. Army Air Corps. In 1945, at age 17, Norma married Ruben. He was then sent on to France, leaving Norma in Manchester where she gave birth to their first son, Julian, in 1946. In 1947, Norma traveled on a ship with 9-month old Julian to the United States. Landing in New York, they then made their way to San Antonio to join Ruben where he had settled after the war. Eventually, the family moved to Los Angeles, CA where, in 1955, they had another son, William. Norma and Ruben divorced in 1962.

A highlight of Norma's life was becoming a proud U.S. citizen in 1964. But the biggest highlight of all came in 1967 when she married Russell J. Stecyk. They bought a house in Santa Clarita, CA where they lived happily through their 45 years of marriage.

Norma spent a good deal of her life serving others. During her career, she worked as an x-ray technician, nurse, and manager; first for a Glendale, CA medical practice, and later for a clinic in Saugus, CA. After she retired she was active in the local chapter of Zonta International, a global organization of women working together to improve the lives of women through service, advocacy and awareness. Norma was also a member of the Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church in Saugus, CA.

She is survived by her husband Russell J. Stecyk; her brother, Bill (Bette) Ryder; her sons: Julian (Joanna) Ryder and William (Eden) Ryder; and six grandchildren: Christian, Alyson, Molly, Stephanie, Lesley and Grace.

A private funeral service for family members will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2013. In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome contributions in memory of Norma to: Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley Foundation, PO Box 802332, Santa Clarita, CA 91380.
